Definition

Lumber is also known as timber, it is a kind of wood used for construction as structural material and on paper production as wood pulp. It is supplied both rough and furnished to factories which need such wood. Besides using rough lumber on pulpwood, it is also used to build or create furniture and other which needs additional shaping and cutting.

Kinds of Lumber

Rough lumber is available in various species like for example hardwoods. On the other hand, finished lumbers are those lumbers that are supplied in standard sizes already. Such finished lumbers are used mostly in construction. Softwood, coniferous species which include pine, fir and cedar are some of the species under this lumber.

Classification of Engineered Lumber

Engineered lumber is made by a manufacturer and designed for a certain structural purposes. This include several classification which are Laminated Veneer Lumber, wood I-Joists, Fingered-Jointed, Glu-lam Beams and Manufactured Trusses.

Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) is 1 3⁄4 inch thicknesses with depths such as 9 1⁄2, 11 7⁄8, 14, 16, 18, or 24 inches, and are often doubled or tripled up. It gives support over large spans like removed support walls and garage. This us used on places where dimensional lumber isn't practical to use and in areas which holds heavy load. Wood I-Joists also called as Trus Joists or BCI are used for floor joints on floors of traditional construction on piers which oppose the slab floor construction and on the upper floors. They are created in long period of time and occupy bigger space. Sizes and shapes of the hole and the placing of it should be approved by engineers so as to make sure that it is safe. Engineers must do some calculation first and show such calculation to the authority before they can put hole on it. Finger-Jointed Lumber has the length between 22 and 24 feet however these can grow longer if done with finger-jointing process with the used of small solid pieces, joining it together with use of finger joints and bond so as to make 36 feet long lumber. Glu-lam Beams which is made out of 2×4 or 2×6 stock. By gluing the faces together this create a 4×12 or 6×16 stock. The original size of lumber where putted together as act as one larger piece of lumber Manufactured Trusses, one of the classifications of engineered lumber which are used in home construction as a pre-fabricated replacement for roof rafters and ceiling joists (stick-

Contribution of Lumber to Environment

Using wood during any building or construction would contribute much on the environment than building or constructing building through concrete and steel. Lumber as a wood promote healthier environment since this is renewable and uses the energy of sun to renew itself. It also minimizes the impact of the building to the environment. Manufacturing such would use lesser energy causing lesser air and water pollution. It also guarantee builders that it is strong and can afford to support heavy or huge loads.
